Marrishland is vast, mostly rural, and very dangerous. Besides kobolds and water, you have to watch out for the mud, too. See how the Mar survive by reading our book.

The Niktoti Band

There is a little-invoked part of Vangard's Rules of Governance that any Mar who saves the life of another may demand up to eight years of service as payment — the idea being had not the rescuer come to his aid, he would not have lived another eight years anyway. Weard Berjer Niktot (ca. 3,500 I.D.), however, made himself famous by regularly invoking this right. He was, by all accounts, a strange figure. His star is Numkám'mýn ("never dead") in the constellation of the Tyrant.

The Niktoti Band was famous even before Weard Niktot's death, and there are new stories about their adventures with each generation. This particular story was probably composed during the rise of the duxies after the Marrishland Massacre.

Posted by Matt on 2/6/06: Up until this thread, which was posted in December 2005, I had written all of the stories and Eric had written all of the encyclopedia entries. I was happy to see him write a story, and a fun one at that.

Posted by Eric on 2/11/2006: I rarely write short stories. This is my first attempt at writing short fiction in the last 4 years. Yes, that rarely. I have several ideas for where this can go, but it might be a while before I continue it. There is still a lot of history left to cover. Maybe if Matt has crazy things happen in his life that prevent him from posting a story during a given week, I'll write a new installment. Hey, it worked the last time.
