Drakes and Creatures Main

The Mar only inhabit about one third of the subcontinent, and many parts of that portion are no less a wilderness than the lands north of the Fens of Reur. These wild areas are not empty because Mar are adverse to expanding their territory. Rather, many of the creatures of Marrishland — especially the Drakes — compete with humans for these lands. This section describes the more dangerous flora and fauna of Marrishland.

Posted by Eric on 2/6/2006: Drakes show up in several stories on this site — most notably Affe and the Drakes and Tryggvi Fuchs and the Giens. They also play a key role in Lesson of the Fuel. I came up with most of the critters on this page, but blame Matt for adding guer to the second draft of Lesson. He provided just enough information about the guer to set my imagination on fire. Of course, I really enjoyed writing all of these entries, and I'm especially proud of the marked difference between the main section and the Tactics section of each article. You have a scholar describing each of the Drakes with the curiosity and neutrality of an anthropologist followed by a veteran mapmaker's advice on how to kill them without letting them kill you back.

Posted by Matt on 2/7/2006: Guer are a joy and a pleasure. And we needed some general classification for the largest body of Drakes. There simply were not enough goblins, kobolds, ochres, insero and damnens to go around, and I'm sure I'm missing a few. Besides, I think I was trying to justify the use of guerilla warfare in a country where that's not a natural term in their language. Originally, I had the character misprounce it as "gorilla warfare" but Eric reminded me there are no primates in Marrishland.
