Domus Palus

Domus Palus, the capital of Marrishland, lies in a natural harbor on the west coast of the subcontinent, approximately four hundred miles south of the Fens of Reur. It is easily the oldest existing city in Marrishland, founded eight millennia ago by colonists from beyond the Great Ocean to the west. In the dialect of its founders, its name meant simply "house in the swamp," though this is not common knowledge even among its scholars. The eventual mistranslation of the word "palus" to mean "city" or "fortress" has resulted in "palus" being appended to the names of all major Mar strongholds.

Domus Palus is easily the most populous Mar city, with an estimated 500,000 inhabitants, more than half of which are slaves. Only wizards are permitted to live in the ancient town center, which was clearly built to house in excess of 100,000. With only about 20,000 wizards, however, most of the city center is uninhabited, and much of it is in ruins. Outside the inner wall live the vast majority of the free mundanes of Domus Palus, and while this area is encircled by wooden watchtowers, it lacks a defensive wall. Beyond the towers toil the poorest mundanes and a vast population of slaves who feed the city from their assigned farm plots.

At the heart of Domus Palus lies the great citadel where the Mardux and his closest advisors live. The citadel was once an architectural wonder, built to protect incoming supply ships entering the docks a few hundred yards away from its western wall. The swift, narrow, and rocky Lapis Amnis flows just two miles north of the citadel. This river marks the northern boundary of Domus Palus.
